Winnipeg emergency services face new staffing and crisis response proposals

Winnipeg is seeing competing approaches to addressing emergency service pressures. Mayoral candidate Don Woodstock has pledged to hire 100 new firefighters and 50 paramedics by utilizing savings from overtime expenditures. Woodstock argues that the city could offset the costs of new salaries and benefits by reducing the significant overtime spending, which the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg reports has exceeded $58 million. However, union leadership has questioned whether these savings alone can cover the total cost of new hires.

Separately, Mayor Gillingham’s motion to establish a fourth emergency service has received unanimous support from the executive policy committee. This proposed community crisis response model aims to divert mental health and lower-risk crisis calls away from police, fire, and paramedic services by linking community-based responders directly to the 911 dispatch system. While union representatives welcome the measure to reduce wellness calls, they maintain that provincial collaboration is still necessary to address underlying staffing shortages.
