Winnipeg Jets face uncertainty as Connor Hellebuyck requests trade
The Winnipeg Jets are entering a period of significant transition as star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has requested a trade from the organization. Following a decline in team performance last season, Hellebuyck, a Vezina Trophy winner, failed to report to training camp and has subsequently been suspended by the team without pay.
In a statement released through his agent, Hellebuyck indicated that a change is best for him and his family. The tension between the player and the club has become visible at the Canada Life Centre, where photos of the goaltender have been removed from the arena walls ahead of the season opener.
To address the vacancy in net, the Jets have signed Stuart Skinner to a two-year contract worth $7.5 million. Skinner, formerly of the Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins, will take on the pressure of the starting role as the team attempts to move past the Hellebuyck era.
