Winnipeg Jets suspend Connor Hellebuyck following trade request

The Winnipeg Jets have suspended star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck without pay for the start of the 2026-27 season after he failed to report to training camp. Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner, officially requested a trade on August 27 following a period of tension regarding the team's ability to compete for a Stanley Cup. The goaltender had previously criticized general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff’s roster moves after the team finished seventh in the Central Division last season.

Team leadership expressed mixed emotions regarding the holdout. Captain Adam Lowry noted that while the locker room felt “heartbroken” by the decision, the team remains focused on returning to the playoffs. Winger Kyle Connor suggested that a return to the roster would be difficult if Hellebuyck does not fully recommit to the organization.

In the interim, the Jets will rely on Stuart Skinner, who recently signed a two-year, $7.5-million contract, and Domenic DiVincentiis to manage the goaltending duties.
