Connor Hellebuyck traded from Winnipeg Jets to New Jersey Devils
In a blockbuster NHL trade, the Winnipeg Jets have sent three-time Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck to the New Jersey Devils. The deal concludes a period of tension following Hellebuyck’s request for a trade and his decision to sit out training camp.
In exchange for the star goaltender, the Jets received a significant package including forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goaltender Nico Daws, the rights to Alexander Command, a 2029 second-round draft pick, and a 2027 seventh-round draft pick. New Jersey General Manager Sunny Mehta stated the move was intended to address goaltending stability and bolster the team's championship contention efforts.
Several other teams were reportedly involved in discussions prior to the finalization of the deal. The Florida Panthers were identified as a primary choice for Hellebuyck, but negotiations stalled as Winnipeg sought a goaltender in return. The Carolina Hurricanes also attempted to facilitate a three-team trade to acquire Hellebuyck by flipping a forward, but the plan failed to materialize.
