Winnipeg man charged after security guard stabbed in grocery store robbery

A 23-year-old man, identified as Peter Edwin Morrison Black, is in custody following a robbery and stabbing at a FreshCo grocery store on Sargent Avenue in Winnipeg.

According to police, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon when the suspect attempted to leave the store with unpaid merchandise. A physical altercation between the suspect and a 24-year-old security guard spilled outside the business, where the guard was allegedly stabbed in the upper body with a sharp-edged weapon. The victim was initially hospitalized in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable status.

Investigators located Black near Sherbrook Street and Ellice Avenue on Saturday morning. He has been charged with robbery, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon. Sobeys, the parent company of FreshCo, issued a statement emphasizing that the safety of teammates and customers is their top priority.
