Winnipeg municipal election sees incumbent councillor Russ Wyatt defeated
In the Winnipeg municipal election, veteran city councillor Russ Wyatt lost his seat in the Transcona ward. Wyatt, who was facing two separate sexual assault charges involving allegations of drugging and assaulting men, finished in fourth place with approximately 11 per cent of the vote. Lora Meseman is projected to take over the role for the ward.
Other mayoral candidates in Winnipeg, including Kevin Klein and Scott Gillingham, campaigned on platforms involving increased policing and the use of drone surveillance. Voters expressed diverse concerns at polling stations, including public safety, transit, and homelessness.
While some candidates proposed bolstering police presence, experts noted that such measures might not address the city's underlying social issues. The Winnipeg Police Service currently accounts for 27 per cent of the city's $1.49 billion operating budget.
