Winnipeg mayoral race expands as candidates reveal platforms

The Winnipeg mayoral race has expanded to 13 candidates following the entry of Tracey Drexler. Drexler has identified the addiction, homelessness, and violent crime crises as central issues that require urgent attention.

Mayoral candidate Don Woodstock has unveiled a housing plan targeting vacant and derelict properties. His proposal includes a 30-day deadline for owners of such buildings to provide a redevelopment or demolition plan, failing which the city could expropriate the property. To encourage rebuilding, Woodstock suggests the city provide free, pre-approved housing designs.

Additionally, Woodstock’s platform includes a mandatory insurance system for rental buildings to ensure the city is notified of lapses, and escalating fines or property loss for landlords whose buildings are repeatedly linked to criminal activities like drug trafficking.
