Winnipeg Sikh community targeted by hate graffiti ahead of Nagar Kirtan

The Sikh community in Winnipeg faced targeted hate and death threats via spray-painted graffiti on signs along the route for the annual Nagar Kirtan procession. The defaced signs included a swastika and racist rhetoric directed at Indians. The Winnipeg Police Hate Crimes Unit is investigating the incidents.

Despite the threats, the community proceeded with the celebration, which commemorates the 422nd anniversary of the completion of the Guru Granth Sahib. The event drew approximately 55,000 people to Memorial Park and downtown Winnipeg for the procession and festival.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew condemned the hateful activity, stating there is no place for racism against Sikhs or Punjabi people in the province. Winnipeg police increased their presence at the event to ensure safety.
