Winnipeg supervised consumption site reports issue-free first week

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew reported that the province’s first supervised consumption site in Winnipeg has completed its first week of operations without any reported issues. The facility, which opened on August 11, is currently operating temporarily out of a fenced-off parking lot at 366 Henry Ave while a permanent building undergoes renovations.

Managed by the Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre, the site has served more than 125 clients since its opening. Kinew expressed hope that the facility will eventually become a routine part of the healthcare system for individuals with severe substance-use issues. To address safety concerns, security and the Downtown Community Safety Partnership are present during operating hours.

While the site has seen a quiet first week, local residents have expressed frustration regarding a perceived lack of consultation and the cancellation of planned tours prior to the opening. Outreach workers noted that the region has experienced an unprecedented summer regarding drug-related calls and overdoses.
