Winnipeg Transit operator stabbed with syringe, union pushes for full enclosure shields

Early on Wednesday morning, a female passenger on Winnipeg Transit Route F6 attacked the driver at the intersection of Isabel Street and William Avenue. After being asked to pay the fare, the rider reached around the operator’s safety shield and stabbed the driver twice in the leg with a syringe. The operator sustained minor injuries and was taken to Seven Oaks Hospital in stable condition.

Winnipeg police’s major crimes unit opened an investigation, but no arrests have been made. The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1505, represented by president James Van Gerwen, renewed calls for the installation of full‑enclosure shields on all buses, noting that $2.7 million has been earmarked for the upgrades. The union says the incident follows a prior syringe threat and highlights ongoing safety concerns for transit workers.
