Świnoujście container terminal project cleared by Polish court
Poland's Supreme Administrative Court has dismissed a cassation appeal by the German association Lebensraum Vorpommern regarding the environmental decision for the deep-water container terminal in Świnoujście. The ruling confirms that the project, known as Przylądek Pomerania, complies with both national and European environmental laws.
The court noted that the decision by the General Director for Environmental Protection actually increased environmental protections and mitigation measures for the Natura 2000 areas involved. The project has also received a positive opinion from the European Commission.
As the largest investment in the history of the Świnoujście port, the terminal is designed to serve as a transshipment hub for Central Europe, including Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary. The facility will be capable of handling the largest oceanic container ships and is intended for dual civil-military use. To minimize environmental impact, the terminal plans to utilize zero-emission transshipment technologies and shore-to-ship power systems.
