Świnoujście military divers neutralize WWII naval mines
Military divers from the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla have begun a major operation to neutralize five British aerial naval mines from World War II in the Baltic Sea. The artifacts, identified as Mark IV, V, and VI types, were discovered during construction work for a new breakwater at the outer port in Świnoujście, Poland.
The mines are located at a depth of approximately 10 meters, roughly 1,000 meters from the Świnoujście LNG terminal. Each device measures about 3 meters in length and contains between 350 and 550 kilograms of explosive material, with the total explosive weight estimated between 2,500 and 3,500 kilograms of TNT equivalent.
The neutralization process, scheduled to run from October 5 to October 8, utilizes a deflagration method to minimize environmental and infrastructural impact. Due to the high risk, authorities have established maritime and land safety zones. A swimming ban is in effect along a stretch of beach extending from Ahlbeck, Germany, to Międzyzdroje, and vessels are prohibited from approaching the site within a specified radius.
