Winston Churchill painting exhibition opens at Wallace Collection

An exhibition titled ‘Churchill: The Painter’ is currently on display at the Wallace Collection, featuring approximately 50 paintings from Winston Churchill’s body of work. The exhibition is scheduled to run until November 29, 2026.

Churchill was a prolific artist, producing more than 500 works. His talent was recognized by contemporaries such as Pablo Picasso, who remarked in 1945 that Churchill would have earned a professional living if he had chosen painting as a career. Churchill often painted landscapes, including scenes from his home at Chartwell, Blenheim Palace, and the Cote d’Azur in France. He also expressed a passion for the colors of Morocco, producing works such as ‘Near Marrakech’ and ‘The Todhra Gorge’.

Churchill initially showed his work at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition in 1947, using the pseudonym ‘David Winter’ to ensure his submissions were judged without bias. He was also known for his generosity, gifting 73 of his paintings to various individuals.
