Winter Haven school bus crash kills two, including a student

A multi-vehicle crash in Winter Haven, Florida, resulted in two deaths and several injuries on Monday morning. The incident involved a Polk County school bus carrying 39 people, including 37 students, the driver, and the driver's 9-year-old daughter.

According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, the accident began when a white Chevrolet Malibu crossed the center line and struck the rear side of the school bus. The impact caused the bus to lose a tire and veer into the oncoming lane, where it collided head-on with a silver Jeep. The Jeep subsequently caught fire.

The fatalities include a 10th-grade student from Winter Haven High School and the occupant of the Jeep. Emergency responders transported between five and seven individuals to local hospitals with potentially traumatic injuries, with at least one person reported in critical condition.

Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Frederick Heid noted that students regularly participate in emergency evacuation drills, which may have mitigated further harm. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the initial collision.
