Winter health and activity initiatives in the United Kingdom
Bridgnorth Running Club is hosting an evening run on October 26, 2026, as part of the national ‘Let’s Lift the Curfew’ initiative. Partnering with England Athletics and the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, the event aims to encourage physical activity during darker months by addressing safety concerns related to unlit streets and cold temperatures. The five-kilometre route will feature three staggered pace groups to accommodate different fitness levels.
In addition to community fitness events, health experts are advising on bone health maintenance during the winter. Physiotherapist Uzo Ehiogu from the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital notes that reduced physical activity and limited sunlight can lead to bone deterioration. Recommendations for maintaining skeletal strength include engaging in weight-bearing cardiovascular exercises, such as walking, and considering vitamin D supplements to compensate for reduced sunlight exposure.
