Winter Palace of Sports glass falls during hockey match in Sofia
Large pieces of glass, some the size of a human palm, fell from the ceiling of the Winter Palace of Sports in Sofia during a children's ice hockey match. While the falling debris landed near the players and in view of parents, no injuries were reported.
Following the incident, officials immediately evacuated the children from the ice and suspended the match to secure the area. The facility, which is state-owned under the Ministry of Sport, has temporarily closed the rink and canceled all scheduled sessions until repairs are completed.
Iliyan Todorov, the manager of the Winter Palace of Sports, stated that the building was inherited in a “worn out and neglected” state upon his appointment on August 1. He noted that a specialized company will be brought in to assist with the removal of the damaged windows. Meanwhile, concerned parents are organizing a petition to demand major repairs and are considering legal action against the relevant institutions regarding the safety of the facility.
