Winter preparations begin in Germany and Austria
As temperatures drop, preparations for the winter season are underway in Central Europe. In Germany, weather patterns indicate that while high-altitude peaks like the Zugspitze, Feldberg, and Brocken often see snow as early as October, the first significant snowfall for mid-mountain ranges typically occurs in November. Regions such as the Harz, Erzgebirge, Thuringian Forest, and Black Forest are expected to see snow cover at elevations above 500 to 1,000 meters during this month.
In Austria, the Caritas organization is activating its winter emergency services to protect the homeless from freezing temperatures. Following a period of extreme cold in previous winters, the Caritas is relaunching its 'Kältetelefon' (cold helpline) and increasing emergency sleeping capacities. In collaboration with the Social Fund Vienna, 70 additional emergency beds are being provided to supplement the existing 1,890 accommodation and counseling spaces available to those in need.
