Winter preparedness: Vehicle safety and snow load considerations
As temperatures drop, experts emphasize the importance of preparing vehicles and structures for winter conditions. For motorists, checking tires is critical. In Germany, situational winter tire requirements apply during ice, snow, or slush. The ADAC recommends checking tire condition and switching to winter or all-season tires early, while the O-to-O rule suggests maintaining winter tires from October to Easter.
Additionally, vehicle lighting and visibility must be inspected to ensure safety in low-light winter months. Beyond transportation, structural safety regarding snow loads is a significant concern. A layer of snow only ten centimeters thick can weigh over 100 kilograms per square meter.
In Germany, roof statics are determined by specific snow load zones. Zone 1 (e.g., North Sea coast) requires resistance to approximately 66 kg per square meter, while Zone 3 (e.g., Alpine regions) requires much higher resistance. Structural integrity for glass roofs depends on the thickness of the glass and the strength of the supporting profiles to withstand these varying regional weights.
