Winter safety advice for drivers and pedestrians
As winter weather approaches, safety guidelines emphasize vehicle preparation and personal preparedness for travelers. For drivers, essential maintenance includes checking battery condition, inspecting tire tread and pressure, ensuring coolant levels are correct, and replacing worn wiper blades. It is also recommended to verify that brakes and all vehicle lights are functioning properly.
Travelers are advised to carry emergency kits containing items such as jumper cables, a flashlight, first-aid supplies, de-icer, an ice-scraper, blankets, and snacks. To mitigate risks during delays, drivers should keep fuel tanks at least one quarter full and ensure windows and roofs are cleared of snow and ice.
Pedestrians and cyclists should prioritize visibility by wearing reflective or bright clothing. Pedestrians are cautioned to remain aware of surroundings, as hats or earphones can muffle traffic sounds, while cyclists should ensure they have high-quality front and rear lights.
