Spain issues highest weather warnings as severe storms threaten flash floods
A dangerous high-altitude low pressure system, known as a Dana, has settled over the western Mediterranean, triggering severe weather warnings across Spain. The highest alert levels have been issued for the southern coast of the Valencia province and the northern part of Alicante, specifically affecting areas around Gandia, Dénia, Jávea, and Cabo de la Nao. Meteorologists warn that up to 200 liters of rain per square meter could fall within a twelve-hour period.
Other regions under high alert include Almería, where emergency services have already responded to over one hundred calls in El Ejido. The islands of Ibiza and Formentera are also facing significant risks, with potential rainfall exceeding 150 liters. The phenomenon is driven by cold air from the British Isles interacting with unusually warm Mediterranean waters, creating intense thunderstorms and flash flood risks. Authorities are urging residents and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel and to move to higher floors if flooding occurs.
