Italy winter tire regulations and seasonal vehicle maintenance
Drivers traveling in Italy face varying winter equipment regulations, as there is no uniform nationwide mandate. Instead, individual provinces set specific rules for certain road sections via local ordinances. Violations can result in fines of up to 345 euros.
In many areas, the requirement for winter or all-season tires, or carrying snow chains, typically applies from November 15 to April 15. However, specific regions have different timelines; for instance, the Aosta Valley begins its requirement on October 15, and certain mountain passes may require equipment year-round. Drivers are advised to follow local traffic signage, as requirements may apply regardless of current weather conditions.
In preparation for colder temperatures, automotive experts recommend several maintenance steps to ensure safety. Key actions include checking coolant antifreeze levels (ideally protecting down to minus 25 degrees Celsius), testing battery health, and ensuring windshield washer fluid is winter-ready. Additionally, maintaining tire tread depth—ideally at least 4 mm for wet conditions—and checking all exterior lighting are essential for winter driving safety.
