Wintermute registers as U.S. broker-dealer to trade equities and ETFs

Algorithmic trading firm Wintermute has announced that its affiliate, Wintermute USA LLC, has registered as a broker-dealer with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). This move marks a formal expansion into regulated U.S. markets, allowing the firm to bridge digital assets with traditional finance.

As a regulated proprietary trading firm, Wintermute USA LLC is authorized to trade traditional equities and equity options for its own account. The registration also enables the firm to act as an Authorized Participant (AP) for exchange-traded products (ETPs), including those linked to digital assets, facilitating the creation and redemption of ETF shares. Additionally, the firm is permitted to self-clear its own digital asset securities transactions.

Wintermute CEO Evgeny Gaevoy noted that the firm's strategy is built on the conviction that digital assets and traditional finance will continue to develop in parallel and eventually integrate more deeply. The company aims to pursue market-making roles on major exchanges such as the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, targeting competition with established Wall Street market makers within three to five years.
