Wirecard trial: Munich court rejects defense motion to suspend proceedings

A Munich court has rejected a motion from the defense to suspend the massive Wirecard fraud trial, which has been ongoing for nearly four years. The defense, representing former CEO Markus Braun, had requested a suspension to await the outcome of a separate fraud proceeding involving a former manager.

Presiding Judge Markus Födisch stated that the court intends to proceed, aiming for November to begin closing arguments and sentencing motions from both the prosecution and the defense. The court previously determined that waiting for the other witness was unnecessary, noting she had already declined to testify earlier this year.

The trial concerns the 2020 collapse of the former DAX-listed company after 1.7 billion euros in reported assets were found to be missing. Prosecutors allege that Braun and other accomplices fabricated revenue over several years to deceive lenders, estimating the total fraud damage at three billion euros. Braun continues to deny all allegations.
