Wireless Broadband Alliance advocates for Wi-Fi integration in 6G
The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) is advocating for the integration of Wi-Fi as a core component of forthcoming 6G international standards. The industry body argues that relying solely on mobile networks may fail to provide the consistent indoor connectivity and ubiquitous coverage required by the ITU’s IMT-2030 framework.
By incorporating Wi-Fi into the initial design phase of 6G, the WBA suggests the industry can reduce operational costs and technological complexity. This approach aims to create an agnostic network environment where users experience seamless connectivity regardless of whether they are connected via mobile networks or Wi-Fi.
In Europe, the discussion is heightened by infrastructure policies. While the European Union’s Gigabit Infrastructure Act mandates fiber optic cabling in new buildings, analysts suggest that a lack of sufficient Wi-Fi spectrum could lead to wireless interference and degraded service quality in high-density residential areas.
