Wireless energy internet concept and battery safety risks
Researchers at Hong Kong Polytechnic University have proposed a concept called the ‘wireless energy internet’. This system aims to move beyond current wireless charging methods, which typically involve transferring energy to a battery or supercapacitor first. Instead, this new infrastructure would distribute energy directly into the specific form required by a device, such as light, heat, or mechanical motion.
The proposed applications are categorized into four groups: chemical energy for charging batteries, optical energy for light, thermal energy for heating, and mechanical energy for powering motors. This approach seeks to eliminate the intermediate step of battery storage for many devices.
Separately, safety concerns regarding leaking batteries highlight the chemical risks posed by substances like sulfuric acid, lead, and mercury. Contact with battery electrolytes can cause skin irritation, chemical burns, or vision loss if it enters the eyes. In the event of exposure, it is recommended to rinse the affected area with cold running water for 15 minutes and seek medical consultation. Leaked batteries should be secured in airtight containers using protective gloves and masks to avoid inhaling harmful vapors.
