Wireless standards shift focus from speed to reliability

The evolution of wireless networking standards is shifting focus from raw speed to reliability. While previous generations, such as Wi-Fi 4 through Wi-Fi 7, focused on significantly increasing maximum theoretical data rates, the upcoming Wi-Fi 8 standard is being developed with a different priority.

The IEEE has designated Wi-Fi 8 as ‘Ultra High Reliability’. This marks a departure from the trend of chasing higher throughput, as current standards like Wi-Fi 7 already offer speeds—up to 23Gbit per band—that exceed most consumer internet capabilities.

In contrast, Wi-Fi 7 is currently being integrated into consumer hardware. It offers improvements for congested environments through features like Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which allows routers to transmit and receive data across the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands simultaneously. Wi-Fi 7 also utilizes 320 MHz channel widths and 4K-QAM to enhance performance, though real-world benefits depend heavily on existing internet plans and device density.
