Wireless technology: How Wi-Fi and 5G frequency bands function
Wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 4G, and 5G operate using the electromagnetic spectrum, specifically through radio and microwave radiation. These signals function by modulating a carrier wave—altering its amplitude or phase—to encode digital data into billions of waves per second.
Wi-Fi utilizes different frequency bands, each with distinct characteristics. The 2.4 GHz band offers longer range but is often congested in residential areas, with typical speeds up to 100 Mbps. The 5 GHz band acts as a wider highway, supporting higher speeds up to 1 Gbps. The newest 6 GHz band provides the largest spectrum, allowing for speeds up to 2 Gbps, though it is primarily used by newer devices.
While lower frequencies like 2.4 GHz can penetrate obstacles more effectively, higher frequency bands like 5 GHz and 6 GHz provide significantly higher throughput for data-intensive applications, albeit over shorter distances.
