Wisconsin begins regulated furbearer trapping season
Wisconsin’s furbearer trapping seasons officially commenced on Saturday, October 17. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has launched regulated seasons for several species, including coyote, fox, bobcat, and raccoon.
These seasons are part of the DNR’s strategy to manage local wildlife populations sustainably. Funding for these wildlife projects is primarily derived from hunting, fishing, and trapping license fees, as well as federal taxes on firearms and ammunition, rather than state income taxes.
First-time trappers are required to complete an approved education course, though exemptions exist for certain youth programs. The DNR also provides specialized training events, such as the Women’s Trap Camp and the Youth Trap Camp, to support new participants.
