Wisconsin confirms first fall avian flu case at turkey farm

Wisconsin officials have confirmed the first fall case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) at a turkey farm near Rice Lake. The detection comes as fall bird migration increases the risk of transmission to domestic poultry due to cooler weather and migrating waterfowl.

Dr. Keith Poulsen of the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory stated that authorities are working with poultry producers and the Department of Animal Health to manage surveillance, testing, depopulation, and sanitation on the affected premises. The area is noted for its high density of poultry producers.

In addition to poultry, officials are monitoring the cattle supply. The H5N1 strain has been reported in lactating cows in Texas and other western states. This poses a potential risk to Wisconsin farmers who frequently transport young calves to Texas for growth before returning them to milking herds.
