Wisconsin gubernatorial candidates debate economy and data centers
Democrat David Crowley and Republican Tom Tiffany engaged in a tense debate regarding the future of Wisconsin, focusing on economic policy, the 2020 election, and the impact of data centers. The candidates are competing to succeed retiring Democratic Governor Tony Evers in the state’s first open gubernatorial race since 2010.
Economic affordability was a central theme. Tiffany proposed undoing tax increases and returning surplus funds to residents, while Crowley advocated for a fair tax system to fund infrastructure, education, and transportation. Crowley criticized Tiffany’s ties to Donald Trump and wealthy donors, alleging that Tiffany’s policies favor the billionaire class.
Data center development has emerged as a significant political issue. While a Marquette Law School poll indicates three out of four voters view data centers as more trouble than they are worth, both candidates have previously expressed support for the industry. Crowley has called for centers to be built with union labor and powered by at least 70% renewable energy. Tiffany has proposed repealing the sales tax exemptions currently enjoyed by companies building these facilities.
