Wisconsin-Madison study links lower protein intake to healthier ageing

A review of more than 350 studies, published in the journal Cell Press Blue on July 31, was led by researchers at the University of Wisconsin‑Madison. The analysis found that reducing protein consumption can benefit sedentary adults by improving metabolism, blood‑sugar regulation, and inflammation, and may extend healthy lifespan. The authors highlighted that lower protein intake raises levels of the hormone fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), which is associated with increased energy expenditure and reduced cellular damage.

The study also noted that high‑protein diets remain valuable for physically active individuals seeking muscle growth and exercise recovery. Researchers cautioned that many people, especially those with largely sedentary lifestyles, may be consuming more protein than needed, potentially leading to adverse health effects.
