Wisconsin program connects local farmers to food pantries

The Connecting Farms to Families program is working to combat food insecurity in Wisconsin by linking local producers directly with food assistance organizations. Led by the Milwaukee-based Hunger Task Force, the initiative was launched with a $2.5 million grant from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) as part of the state’s 2025-27 budget.

The program utilizes the grant to purchase food from small and mid-sized, family-owned farms and producers across the state. This food is then distributed free of charge to local food pantries and assistance organizations. To date, the program has purchased products from 582 farmers and producers spanning 66 Wisconsin counties, including ranchers, dairy farmers, cheesemakers, grain farmers, and fruit and vegetable growers.

According to Hunger Task Force CEO Matt King, the program provides a reliable market for local producers while ensuring their products reach families in need who might otherwise lack access to such goods.
