China-Nepal border mudslides trigger major rescue operations
Severe flooding and mudslides along the China-Nepal border have caused significant casualties and infrastructure damage. In the Tibet Autonomous Region, a sudden mudslide near the Gyirong Port has damaged roads, power networks, and communication systems, impacting a major overland trade route.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered an all-out rescue mission to locate missing persons and minimize further loss of life. To support these efforts, 145 officers and soldiers from the Xigaze detachment of the People’s Armed Police have been deployed to the affected border area.
In Nepal, the Bhotekoshi River flooding has caused extensive damage to settlements, government facilities, and hydropower projects in the Rasuwa district. At least eight deaths have been confirmed, with many others still unaccounted for. Authorities suspect the flooding may have been triggered by a sudden release of water from glacial lakes in Tibet.
