Witwatersrand Basin shepherd discovers 7kg gold mass in cave
A shepherd in South Africa’s Witwatersrand Basin reportedly discovered a 7-kilogram mass of gold while seeking shelter from a storm in a cave. While grazing his flock, the man encountered heavy rain and sought refuge in a nearby cave, where he noticed an unusual structure and loose stones in the wall.
Upon investigating the cavity behind the stones, he uncovered a large, shining object. Initial reports suggest the object is a pure gold mass weighing approximately 7 kilograms. Experts are currently investigating whether the find is a natural geological formation or a cache of gold hidden by individuals in the past.
The Witwatersrand Basin is one of the world’s most significant gold-producing regions. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the basin has accounted for approximately 40% of all gold ever mined in history. While the discovery is significant, official confirmation regarding the purity, exact weight, and legal ownership of the gold from South African authorities is still pending.
