Wizards of the Coast to return Pioneer competitive play in 2027

Wizards of the Coast is planning to reintroduce competitive play for the Magic: The Gathering Pioneer format in 2027. According to Blake Rasmussen, the company is looking to implement a series of Regional Championship Qualifiers (RCQs) and potentially a Regional Championship.

William Jensen, Senior Director of Global Play, has indicated these plans are in development, though Rasmussen noted that the current state of the plan remains subject to change. The Pioneer format, established in 2019, has seen a decline in organized play support following pandemic-related suspensions and a strategic focus on the Standard format.

Analysts suggest the format may require balancing to address power creep and the prevalence of specific deck archetypes, such as Prowess, Lessons, and various combo or control strategies, before the competitive season begins.
