WizardTales GmbH warns of security illusions in cloud encryption models

WizardTales GmbH, the operator of the German public cloud platform WX-ONE, has raised concerns regarding the security promises of Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) and Hold Your Own Key (HYOK) encryption models. The company argues that these models can create a false sense of security, as the actual decryption often still occurs within the cloud provider's infrastructure.

While BYOK allows customers to introduce their own key material into a management environment and HYOK keeps significant keys outside the provider's regular management, neither method inherently prevents a cloud provider from accessing decrypted data. WX-ONE is calling for a more transparent debate regarding the technical limitations of these encryption models, particularly as the industry seeks better ways to manage data sovereignty and compliance.
