Wizz Air grounds Airbus A321XLR fleet amid strategy shift
Wizz Air has grounded nine Airbus A321XLR aircraft following the abandonment of its long-haul flight strategy. The airline originally planned to operate 47 of these models to facilitate expansion into the Middle East, but has since reduced its order to 11 units, converting the remaining 36 commitments into standard A321neo aircraft.
Currently, two A321XLR units are stationed at Katowice Airport in Poland after being moved from London Gatwick, though the airline intends to return them to short-haul routes soon. Another unit is parked in Milan due to ground damage, while three others are being used for European short-haul flights. To support its conventional fleet, Wizz Air has removed Pratt & Whitney engines from three grounded A321XLRs in Poland to install them in A321neo aircraft.
