Wizz Air scales back Airbus A321XLR use and long-haul plans

Wizz Air has significantly reduced the utilization of its Airbus A321XLR fleet, abandoning previous plans to use the aircraft for long-haul operations. The airline originally intended to use the model's extended range to expand its network, specifically through a hub in Abu Dhabi. However, following the closure of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi operations, the company has determined that the aircraft no longer fits its current business model.

Out of the 11 A321XLR aircraft remaining in its order—down from an original 47—six are currently out of operation or not in regular commercial use. Some of these aircraft are being stored in Bydgoszcz, Poland. In certain instances, engines have been removed from these A321XLRs to support other Airbus A321neo aircraft in the fleet, which have been grounded due to ongoing Pratt & Whitney engine issues.

The shift away from the A321XLR is also driven by the airline's focus on operational efficiency. The XLR models are heavier than the standard A321neo and require longer refueling times due to additional fuel tanks, which conflicts with the low-cost carrier's rapid turnaround requirements.
