Wojciech Kowalczyk accuses Polish football legends of match-fixing
Former Polish footballer and commentator Wojciech Kowalczyk has leveled serious allegations of match-fixing against several legends of Polish football during a recent interview with Żurnalista. Kowalczyk specifically named prominent figures including Zbigniew Boniek, Kazimierz Deyna, Jan Tomaszewski, and Kazimierz Górski, suggesting that corruption was widespread during the 1970s and 1990s.
Kowalczyk also revisited the controversial 1992/93 Polish championship season, known as the ‘Sunday of Miracles’. He questioned the legitimacy of Lech Poznań being awarded the title after the Polish Football Association (PZPN) annulled the results of Legia Warszawa and ŁKS Łódź due to corruption suspicions. Kowalczyk claimed that Lech Poznań had ‘bought all the matches’ that season and argued that if the title was stripped from the original winners, it should not have been reassigned to another club.
He characterized the era as one where corruption was systemic, suggesting that even politicians were involved in influencing football outcomes. Kowalczyk noted that while Legia Warszawa was also involved in such practices, the issue was a broader problem involving both those who orchestrated the fixes and those who participated in them.
