Woke culture sparks political and corporate debate

The concept of ‘woke culture,’ originally rooted in the African American community to signify awareness of racial injustice and the Black Lives Matter movement, has evolved into a broader political and cultural debate. It now encompasses advocacy for gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

In the United States, the movement has become a central point of contention within the Democratic Party. While proponents advocate for inclusive language and social justice, critics and conservative groups have appropriated the term to describe what they view as an intolerant or dogmatic progressive ideology. This cultural shift has also impacted the corporate sector, notably with Disney facing backlash over casting and narrative choices.

Recent internal critiques, including comments from Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, suggest a period of reflection or ‘awakening from the awakening’ within progressive circles. Some analysts suggest that the focus on identity politics may have inadvertently strengthened populist right-wing movements by creating divisions within the Democratic base.
