Wokingham Borough Council to invest £40m in SEND school places

Wokingham Borough Council has announced a major investment programme to create more than 600 new places for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Between 2026 and 2029, the council will invest over £40 million to expand educational settings within the borough.

The initiative aims to address a shortage of local SEND places that has previously required some children to travel long distances for education. The programme will include new and expanded specialist schools, inclusive provision within mainstream schools, and dedicated hubs for young people over the age of 16.

One key component of the plan is the opening of a new special free school at Rooks Nest in Finchampstead, which will provide 120 places. By increasing local provision, the council intends to reduce the high costs associated with transporting students and paying for independent placements.
