Wolf Attack Kills Two Calves Near Zamboni‑Zappa Refuge in Italy

On 2 August, two calves were found dead near the Zamboni‑Zappa mountain refuge in Macugnaga, Piedmont. Farmer Luca Marta of Azienda Agricola Madalu reported that the predation likely occurred between 9 a.m. and noon, when the area was unmonitored. The incident is attributed to wolves, and Marta warned that a pack of two or three wolves may be active in the region, adding to existing challenges for mountain farms such as drought, bureaucracy and economic sustainability.

The loss underscores growing tensions between livestock owners and wildlife in the Italian Alps, with farmers fearing increased wolf activity could lead to further livestock losses.
