Wolf Biermann criticizes Israeli government and Netanyahu

German singer-songwriter Wolf Biermann has issued sharp criticism of the Israeli government, specifically targeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In an interview with the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, Biermann characterized the military actions in the Gaza Strip as war crimes, though he noted they do not constitute genocide.

Biermann, who has Jewish roots and lost family members in the Holocaust, described the current administration as being in the process of transforming Israel into a “reactionary, brutal oppressor state.” He further labeled Netanyahu and his government as the “worst and most dangerous antisemites” currently in Israel.

These statements coincide with a series of upcoming releases marking significant milestones. On October 7, Biermann will present excerpts from his diaries, titled ‘Ihr löscht das Feuer mit Benzin’, at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The diaries focus on his life in the GDR and the period following his expulsion.

Other upcoming projects include a poetry volume, a reissued children's book, and two new music albums. Additionally, a biographical documentary film directed by Jens Meurer is scheduled to premiere on October 29. These releases precede Biermann’s 90th birthday on November 15 and the 50th anniversary of his expulsion from the GDR on November 16.
