Wolf killed in Vaggeryd, Sweden after attacking sheep

An adult female wolf was shot dead by a hunter in Vaggeryd municipality, Jönköping County, Sweden, during an ongoing attack on a fenced sheep enclosure. The same farm had experienced an earlier attack the previous night that killed two ewes.

The hunter first attempted to scare the predator but, when that failed, discharged his weapon, acting under the authority of Section 28 of the Swedish Hunting Ordinance, which permits owners or caretakers to kill a predator when it attacks or is about to attack livestock. The County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) inspected the site, concluded the killing complied with the law, and decided not to refer the case to police.

The wolf will be transferred to the State Veterinary Institute for necropsy and DNA testing, with results expected within one to three weeks to determine its origin.
