Wolf management policies face criticism and legal rulings in Germany

Wolf management policies in Germany are facing scrutiny and legal challenges from different sectors. In Bavaria, the Bavarian Farmers' Association (BBV) has criticized a new action plan introduced by Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber. Stefan Köhler, BBV Environment President, stated that the plan lacks speed and transparency, arguing that it fails to protect livestock farming and traditional cultural landscapes by implementing complex decision-making structures instead of rapid response options.

In Hesse, a court has upheld the state's wolf management plan, rejecting injunctions filed by environmental groups including the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland. The court ruled that the management plan, which includes the permitted culling of juvenile wolves in the Lahn-Dill district, complies with higher-level federal and European laws. While environmentalists argue that the 40 percent quota for young wolves could lead to long-term extinction, the legal decision allows the management measures to proceed for the 2026/2027 hunting season.
