Wolf Pack at Wildflecken Military Training Area Faces Illegal Hunting and Management Controversy
The Truppenübungsplatz Wildflecken in the Rhön region, bordering Bavaria and Hesse, will host a public “Green Tour” on 26 July 2026, offering visitors insight into the local wolf pack. The pack, known as the Wildflecken Rudel, has been monitored by the DBB‑Wolf program; the first reproduction evidence was recorded in June 2022 when a nursing female was photographed.
Recent incidents have raised concerns over wolf protection. The well‑known female wolf Frigga was illegally killed and improperly disposed of, leaving her pup Nuka vulnerable. In a separate case, hunters mistakenly shot an unrelated young female wolf from the pack after a shooting permit intended for Frigga was issued. These events highlight ongoing disputes between wildlife conservation groups and hunting or agricultural lobbies in the region.
The wolf pack’s territory is officially listed in Bavarian monitoring data, but no recent monitoring records are available for the current year. Conservation activists warn that once the wolves leave the military‑restricted area, they face heightened risk of persecution.
