Wolf sightings in Vechtdal suggest possible settlement in Overijssel

A wolf has been spotted multiple times in the Vechtdal region, including areas around Dalfsen, Ommen, Hardenberg, and Raalte. The province of Overijssel and the national wolf reporting center, BIJ12, are monitoring the situation to determine if the sightings involve the same animal.

Authorities are investigating whether the wolf is merely passing through or intends to establish a permanent residence in the area. Under current guidelines, a wolf is considered established if it remains in the same region for at least six months. To confirm the identity of the animal, officials are looking for DNA evidence from hair, feces, or prey remains.

If a wolf establishes itself and finds a mate, it could eventually lead to the formation of a pack. The province has requested that citizens report any sightings or tracks to the reporting center. Recent policy changes have also granted provinces more authority to manage wolves, including the ability to grant permission for culling to prevent dangerous confrontations.
