Wolf sightings increase in Italy's Campo dei Fiori Regional Park
Authorities in the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park and surrounding municipalities in the Varese province are monitoring an increase in wolf sightings. The Park Authority suggests these sightings likely involve individual specimens in dispersal, which is a natural part of the species' biological cycle.
In response to reports, including an incident where an animal entered the center of Luvinate at night, local mayors, the Park President, the University of Insubria, and provincial authorities are coordinating an operational meeting. The Park has been conducting systematic monitoring using camera traps since March 2024 to collect scientific data.
Broadly, the return of wolves to Italy is being linked to demographic shifts. As populations decline in rural areas, natural landscapes are expanding, allowing species like wolves, deer, and porcupines to recolonize regions such as the Apennines and other parts of the country.
