Veteran FDP politician Wolfgang Kubicki, 74, is preparing to stand for the party’s chairmanship as the FDP struggles in opinion polls, hovering around four percent. He presents himself as a crisis‑manager willing to use a confrontational, high‑visibility style to revive the party’s fortunes.

Kubicki, a former Bundestag vice‑president and long‑time member of the party’s liberal wing, is currently the sole candidate after FDP‑North Rhine‑Westphalia leader Henning Höne withdrew his bid. In interviews he has warned that the party must regain public attention and has criticised both his predecessors and the rising AfD, advocating engagement rather than exclusion.
