Wolfram Weimer faces scrutiny over bookstore award exclusions

German Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer is facing scrutiny following the exclusion of three bookstores from the German Bookstore Award. The decision, based on what Weimer described as ‘constitutional protection-relevant findings,’ has drawn criticism from the cultural sector and the Bundestag’s cultural committee.

Internal documents suggest a conflict regarding the decision-making process. While a departmental recommendation reportedly advised following the independent jury’s original list, Weimer’s office maintains that new information emerged shortly after. A spokesperson for Weimer stated that the minister did not receive the initial recommendation to include all stores, as subsequent information from public sources prompted inquiries with the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

The ministry has classified key documents related to the matter as classified to protect intelligence methods. However, critics and experts have questioned the necessity of this secrecy and the legality of involving intelligence services in the selection process. Weimer has already faced a legal setback regarding the naming of one affected bookstore.
